Let’s begin our journey on Domains of artificial intelligence with the term AI. AI – “Artificial Intelligence” was first coined by John McCarthy in 1956 at the Dartmouth Conference where the field of AI was born. AI research deals with the question of how to create computers that are capable of intelligent behaviour.
AI applications can be deployed in a number of different ways, which can be broadly classified into the following domains:
– Machine learning: This is a method of teaching computers to learn from data, without being explicitly programmed.
– Natural language processing: This involves teaching computers to understand human language and respond in a way that is natural for humans.
– Robotics: This involves the use of robots to carry out tasks that would otherwise be difficult or impossible for humans to do.
– Computer vision: This is the ability of computers to interpret and understand digital images.
To brief more on the history of artificial intelligence (AI) which can be traced back to the early days of computing. One of the earliest examples of AI was ELIZA, a program that simulated the dialogue of a therapist and a patient. ELIZA was created in 1966 by Joseph Weizenbaum, a computer scientist at Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT).
Since the early days of AI, there has been significant progress in the field. Today, AI is used in a variety of applications, including online search, medical diagnosis, and robot control.
In essence, AI encompasses the development of computer systems capable of executing tasks that typically demand human intelligence, such as decision-making, object detection, and the solution of complex problems, among other applications.
Did You Know?
Who created artificial intelligence?
The creation of Artificial Intelligence (AI) is a result of contributions from numerous researchers and pioneers over the years. It doesn’t have a single creator. The field of AI has evolved through the work of many individuals, with notable contributors including Alan Turing, John McCarthy, Marvin Minsky, and others. Alan Turing, a British mathematician and computer scientist, laid some foundational concepts in the 20th century with his Turing Test. John McCarthy coined the term “Artificial Intelligence” in 1956 and played a crucial role in the early development of the field. Marvin Minsky, along with others, contributed to the development of AI as a multidisciplinary field. The creation and evolution of AI have been a collaborative effort over decades, involving the work of numerous scientists and researchers worldwide.
